Podcast Recommendation List

For the last year or so, I have been using my phone more and more for podcasts instead of music.  Listening to people talking – sharing stories or advice or jokes – makes time go by so much quicker for me.  I keep finding interesting podcasts to subscribe to, and I want to share the wealth (and maybe get some recommendations from you)!

avatars-000149024528-pgc8x8-t500x5001|  Dear Hank and John

I love the Vlogbrothers, and I’ve happily ingested their content on YouTube (and bought some Don’t Forget to be Awesome merchandise), but I only recently subscribed to their Comedy Podcast About Death.  They answer listeners’ questions with dubious advice, and the whole thing feels very lowkey educational and humorous.  I have listened to 17 episodes in the last three days, so.  Obviously I like it.

cover170x1702|  Overinvested

This is a newly created podcast by Gavia and Morgan, two geek girls who are great at dissecting fandoms with both intelligence and passion.  As of this writing, there are only eight episodes out, but since they cover topics like “Captain America: Civil War,” “Avatar,” “Black Panther,” and “Batman v Superman,” they are clearly almost all quality. I even listened to the episodes about films I’ve never seen, and I was STILL interested for the full hour-long conversation.  These girls are great.

cover170x1703|  Not Too Deep with Grace Helbig

I love her YouTube channel, and I love her inane conversations with fellow YouTubers.  There’s something really pleasing about listening to people have a good time together, and Grace always makes sure her guests are entertained.  If the fact that her two go-to questions are “What is your worst pants-shitting story in three words or phrases?” and “If you could throw cold spaghetti at one person, who would it be?” sounds amazing to you, then probably you’ll enjoy her podcast.

cover170x1704|  The Liturgists Podcast

And now for something completely different!  The Liturgists Podcast, run by Science Mike and Michael Gungor, is a place for Christian conversations about potentially controversial topics.  Their episodes about racism, prophecy, and the LGBTQ community are especially good.  This is the place I go when I need confirmation that there are Christians who want to engage deeply with the world in love.

Want-listen-Here-details5|  Anna Faris is Unqualified

Who knew a comedy queen could be such a talented advice columnist?  Anna brings on a celebrity guest star in each episode (easily the best is the two-parter with her husband Chris Pratt AND Jenny Slate AND Chris Evans).  They chat for a while before Skyping with someone who has a relationship problem.  Their advice is almost always great, and the banter is even more solid.

Runners- Up

  • Call Your Girlfriend: a feminist friendship podcast
  • The Rob Cast: Rob Bell’s sometimes sermon-y, sometimes guest star-y podcast
  • Stuff Mom Never Told You: another feminist podcast, this time skewed educational
  • Shane and Friends: Shane Dawson’s delightfully raunchy conversations with YouTubers
  • Ear Biscuits: Rhett and Link’s currently paused podcast that goes deeper into the lives of YouTube celebrities

Now you know my tastes – educational, humorous, and thoughtful.  Are there any podcasts you suggest I try?  I would love to add to my queue!

I’m usually hesitant to recommend podcasts. It’s such a personal thing. I’ve wanted to write a blog like this but I was unsure how to approach it. I really liked this post. I’ll be checking out the Ana Faris one. My recommendations are:

    Jen Kirkman: I Seem Fun
    The Guilty Feminist

But like I say I may be well off the mark. Let me know 😀

    I’ll be following!

Thanks Jesse! I’m so glad someone gave me recommendations-and based on the titles, they will be right up my alley. I’ve downloaded some episodes, and I’ll get back to you when I listen to them!

I have become EXTREMELY addicted to The Guilty Feminist, and I’m now subscribed to their sister-podcast, Global Pillage. I was less entralled with Jen Kirkman’s podcast – it was a little to rambly for my taste. I only tried one episode, though. Should I give it a second try?

I Seem Fun works if you click with Jen Kirkman. Some people do, some don’t. I’ve been listening to it since the start so I’m fully invested in the goings on of her life! I went to see her live when she did some shows in London. So I’m sold.

So glad you like The Guilty Feminist! It is great. Sometimes I do wish they’d play around with the format a bit and let conversations go on longer but that’s a small criticism. I’m on a one comedy fan mission to make Sofie Hagen a massive star. Not that she needs my help but I’m there anyway! X

I’ve only gotten around to The Moth, and I really enjoy it! They had an episode set in Great Britain that included stories by a guy who rowed a bathtub across the English Channel AND a lady spy! Thanks for the recommendation…I’ll have to try some of the others soon!
