Looking Back on 2015: Looking Forward to 2016!

2015, in a lot of ways, felt like one big goodbye.  Goodbye to Texas, and the friends I made there.  Goodbye to DTS, and the nerdy pleasure of reading textbooks and writing essays.  Goodbye to Peoria, and the friends who helped me accomplish my goal of moving to Athens.

It was a year of goodbyes, and I’m definitely still sad about many of them.  But the goodbyes are all in anticipation of one massive HELLO – to Athens, Greece, and the life that awaits me there.

As I look forward to my life in Athens, here are some of the things I’m most excited about:

  • GREEK FOOD
  • riding public transportation (more time to read!)
  • helping organize, plan, and implement a new business
  • working with my HD teammates
  • meeting the women who will come to HD
  • traveling around Greece (and hopefully more of Europe)
  • learning a new city and calling it my own
  • stretching myself beyond what I think I can do

2015 was amazing.  I cannot wait to see what 2016 has in store!

What is coming up for you in 2016 that you’re most excited about?  Leave a comment and let me know!

(Look at that!  A Hamilton post is in the top three posts of the year!!  My love for the world is restored.)

Based on this list, it seems like….there is no real consensus of what people like.  Singleness, personality profiles, Christianity, pop culture, personal stuff  – everything is popular.  Which is awesome, because now I get to keep writing about everything!

The opinion of the masses is fine and all, but I have some posts that are personal favorites.  Here are ten of my favorite things that I’ve written this year:

  1. I Can Die in Peace, Because I Saw Broadway on Hamilton  (Honestly, I love every single thing I’ve written about Hamilton – easily viewed in my Hamilton tag)
  2. #44HoursInATrain: DAY THREE
  3. Living in a Muslim Country
  4. To be Grateful, I Have to Stop Worrying
  5. I Still Have a Hole in my Heart

Looking Back on 2015: Travel!

The highlight of 2015 was definitely all the traveling I did.

  • I went to Athens, Greece in March
  • I explored New Orleans and kayaked through a swamp in May
  • I went to Disney World with my family and danced with the Beast in July
  • I spent the entire month of October roadtripping around the United States, staying with friends and seeing new sights in my self-named #32DaysInMyCar
  •  I took a three-day-long train to Seattle to spend Thanksgiving with my brother
  • I bonded with my mom in New York City (and saw Hamilton!) in December

You can read more about each of those trips in my Recent Trips page.

The states I visited in 2015.

All told, I went to 26 states in 2015.  Half the country!  Just this year!

I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to beat that number again.

Hmmm…challenge accepted.

Did you go anywhere awesome this year?  Leave a comment and tell me about your favorite trip of 2015!

Looking Back on 2015: Overview!

2015 was a big year, though it was largely one of transition.

I graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary with a Master’s in Biblical Counseling, bringing to conclusion three awesome years in Texas. Moving from Dallas meant saying goodbye to my friends at DTS, at Trinity Fellow Church, and at the Saranac House.  I never felt more fully myself than when I lived in Dallas, and I will miss the security of having so many amazing friends.

I moved back to my hometown of Peoria in July, where I reconnected with family and my home church. I had a bit of an existential crisis, which always happens when I return home.  It’s hard to leave and change and bring that change back to somewhere familiar.  But in the midst of my own confusion, I reconnected with friends from my old church and my old high school.  And I got to relive old jobs, first as a church secretary, and later as a public librarian.   Continue reading

Workout Week #4

Progress Report

Last week I said I was giving myself a holiday break from working out, and that definitely happened!  Although my family went hiking on Monday and burned a lot of calories, I did nothing else exercise-y the rest of the week.  Plus, there was Christmas food and drinks everywhere.  It’s no big deal, because I firmly believe that healthy eating/living includes the occasional feast.

Goals for Next Week

However, the feasting period is over!

Family time is over, I’m back in my everyday routine, and I can return to regular workouts and tracking my food intake.  I think I’m still going to go easy on myself – I might have lost some muscle strength and endurance over this week.  I won’t increase my goal; instead, I’m going to repeat it.

I want to do at least two workouts more often than not this week.  We’ll see how it goes and re-evaluate next Saturday!

My Life as a Nerd

My Google Drive is full of drabbles, short pieces I’ve written and quickly abandoned before they got anywhere significant.  This one was called “My Life as a Nerd,” and I totally forgot I wrote it last summer.  I will never finish it, and I wanted someone to see it, so Here, Blog!  Enjoy.

I’ve spent my whole life being a nerd because I learned, from the very youngest of ages, that fantasy is better than reality.  It’s not like I had an oppressed, horrible life.  I grew up in a firmly middle-class family: not rich enough to fly somewhere for vacation, but rich enough to afford the newest technological gadget that interested my dad (a case could be made for inherited nerdiness).

The thing is, I was an introverted, extremely shy kid.  Life was hard for me, even when “life” just meant standing in front of the preschool to show off a possession for Show & Tell.  I would agonize about what to bring, worrying about what each possibility would make people think of me.  My stuffed animals seemed to baby-ish, I would probably lose my Polly Pocket, and people would laugh if I told them my Scar action figure was my favorite character in The Lion King.  I couldn’t handle a 30-second presentation designed to create opportunities for tiny children to make friends.

In addition to being terrified of people, I have also always been desperate to impress them.  Reading was a great way to do both.  I could sequester myself in my room for hours at a time, and when I finally emerged to socialize with human beings, nearby adults would always coo and say things like, “Wow, you read more than me!  You’re so smart!”  To prove them right, I would pick up a new book and head back into hiding.   Continue reading

Workout Week #3

Progress Report

By the Number

Look at those numbers!

I took Sunday off, because Sunday is nap day, and I’m realizing that it’s probably going to be A Workout Break 90% of the time.  I’m okay with that.

But the rest of the week?  So awesome!  Read below to find out why.   Continue reading

Solidarity in #Same

Tumblr is a great place to find art or text posts that make you laugh and internally cringe at the same time.  When something hits a little too close to home, all you can do is cry, “same!” and find solace in other people sharing your dysfunctions.

What have you found on the Interwebs that made you #same?

I borrowed an epiphany from my brother when I was visiting him for Thanksgiving.  Roy and Idil were giving me a tour of their house when I noticed Half the Sky on one of their bookshelves (I tend to focus on people’s books during house tours).

“I tried to read that, but it was too depressing,” I said.

“Huh,” Idil mused.  “I thought it was supposed to be really empowering.”

“Oh.  I didn’t get very far.  I just really hate reading over and over again about all the ways women are abused throughout the world.  But…maybe I’ll just skip to the empowering parts.”

Roy laughed.  “That’s an interesting idea,” he said.  “Why should we force ourselves to re-experience something we know is bad?  We have the right to give ourselves a break and just get to the good news.”

Yes,” I said fiercely, absolutely confident in my two-seconds-old opinion.  “That is 100% correct.”  Continue reading

Workout Week #2

Progress Report

By the Number

I took off last Sunday because I was busy and also I didn’t want to work out!  I’m okay with that, especially since what worried me was:  if I take a day off, will I ever get back to working out?  Thankfully, this week the answer was yes!

I used the 7 Minute Workout on Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday. The other days, I counted myself has having worked out if I walked over 10,000 steps in New York City.  I definitely exceeded that goal, since I walked 16,660 steps on Tuesday, 13,700 steps on Wednesday, and 16, 470 steps on Friday.

By My Feelings

I feel okay, I guess.  It feels a bit like a cheat week, since it is easy to be tired and muscle-sore from walking around a cool city and doing amazing things.  It’s a lot harder to work up the motivation to jump around in my bedroom for even a few minutes.  This next week will be the real test!

Goals for Next Week

I’m challenging myself to do the 7 Minute Workout twice a day at least four days this week.  I got to that point at the end of the first week, so it seems pretty reasonable.  And while the majority of this whole deal is to make me feel like I’m being proactive about my health, I would like to actually see some results, aka lost weight and added strength.  I have a feeling I have to work out for longer than seven minutes for that to substantially happen.
